The Law of Attraction

I'm Thinking Of You

The law of attraction is a pretty simple idea with lots of profound consequences. If you spend any time at all in the personal development world, particularly on the spiritual side, you have undoubtedly heard of the Law of Attraction, or LOA as it is commonly acronymized online.

In essence, the law works like this:

Everything In the Universe is made from energy.
What makes things appear to differ in the world is certain characteristics.
When two things have similar characteristics, they attract each other.
When they attract each other, they wind up influencing each other.

Now this influencing can take lots of different forms in the physical world. There are basically an infinite amount of possibilities of almost everything in the world, so there are a lot of possible combinations for how things are going to be attracted to each other.

 Not Magic Socks

Now this doesn’t mean all the time that if you like striped socks that your sock drawer is going to magically fill up with striped socks overnight while you are sleeping. It could, given that all things are possible, but is much more likely that if you really, really, really like striped socks and you think about them a lot, that pretty soon a newspaper ad, or something you see on a website online is going to bring you the opportunity to get more striped socks.

Just because you get more socks through going to the store and buying them, does not mean the Law of Attraction does not work. The LOA is not a magic, rub the genie’s lamp kind of process, it is simply the way our world works al the time.

A Perfect Example of the LOA At Work

Here is something that happened this weekend that is a perfect example of the Law of Attraction action.

I woke up Sunday morning, and after having a bit of breakfast, my wife and I started talking about what we are going to do for dinner. Not a big deal, just regular sort of talking and planning our day. I got to thinking to myself that I would really like to have a hamburger. I don’t eat a lot of meat, but every once in a while I really enjoy a nice big hamburger, especially if it’s fixed on the grill outside.

Well, you know how it is with thinking about things to eat, all of a sudden my mouth started watering, and I got this crystal clear image of me eating a hamburger, crispy from the grill and smelling great, with a bit of BBQ sauce. Not overwhelming, just one of those things that happens and I was really enjoying eating this hamburger in my mind.

Time For Grilling

Then I realized that in order to have this hamburger of my dreams in real life I would have to get myself up and going to go to the store, buy the hamburger, some bbq sauce and some more charcoal and lighter fluid. Possible, sure, but, the truth is, its Sunday, and I really didn’t feel like doing all that so much, but truth was, I was still thinking about hamburgers.

So, we’re sitting in the living room just chatting, and our neighbor calls. “Hello", he says, "Would you guys like to come over for a glass of wine?” “We would really like you to see the new fountain we had installed and it’s a nice to sit by the pool and have a drink”

Sure, we say, that sounds great.

So we get ourselves put together, and walk over to our neighbor’s house. Sure enough the fountain is pretty cool. Aztec masks on the wall with the water pouring out their mouths into a small pool. We get the wine opened and poured and are just sitting around chatting and then he says,

“Would you guys like to stay for a barbecue. All we are having are hamburgers and hot dogs, but it sure would be nice if you could join us.”

And that is how the Law of Attraction works.

And it works all day everyday. It is how our Universe is set up to run, and it is a really simple system.

We decide what we want.
We think thoughts about it and feel feelings about it.
It shows up.
We accept it.

Simple. For sure, there are some things to learn that can make the entire process easier for you without having to worry if you are doing the right thing or not. But the fact is anybody can learn them and use them to bring more of what they want into their lives instead of more of what they don’t want.

So I view getting the hamburger I had been thinking about as a sign from the Universe that everything is on track and working to bring me the things I am spending my thought energy thinking about. Not so highbrow maybe, but the fact is, it works, and I believe it works.

And I like living believing that the Law Of Attraction works like that.  :-)

How about you? Ever have anything like that happen you would be willing to share? If so, please drop us a note in the comment section.

And have yourself an amazing day, you deserve it.

My LOA experience has been with movies on TV. LOL Weird huh? Since I was a kid, if I thought about an old movie or tv show I’d seen before….it would be back on tv within days of me thinking about it. This was the days before cable and all that. It still happens today. Now if I could make it work with lottery numbers! LOL

So true, Tom. Its kind of like new cars. You get a new green car and all of a sudden that’s all you see on the road – green cars. there is a lot of hype about the Law of Attraction and affirmations, I have found these ideas to work excellently in my life. Now I can’t imagine living any other way. Good luck with those numbers. :-)

You pointed out something important about the law of attraction. You don’t have to work hard or try, in any way, to make it happen. In fact, often when we’re working hard and trying hard to get something, it becomes more difficult to get it. Just like the old saying, it never rains but it pours. The more we “try” to get something, the less like it is to be attracted to us. This works with jobs, relationships, money, and even food (as in your beautiful example).

I have an example. I had an ankle injury and stopped playing tennis for 9 months. I returned and played for a few weeks and then my friend invited me to play doubles and I really wanted to say “No” but I did it anyway. That day, only a few weeks back into playing, I stepped on a tennis ball that had rolled onto the court from the nearby court where they were having a clinic. I heard a loud crack and tore 2 ligaments in my ankle. That has fully healed 2 months later. But now I decided, I really just want to hit and preferably with a tennis pro who is consistent and can help me groove my strokes again. I did nothing about it and just received a call from a tennis pro who just returned to the area and was checking to see if I would like some lessons or just to hit with him. LOA in action.

Dr. Erica, you are so right. It is much harder to get something when you try to force it into being. I guess that’s why it’s the Law of Attraction instead of the Law of Forcing everything around me into submission. Mwuah huah huah. I have never found that forcing anything into being a particular way of being has helped anyone at all.

I am sorry to hear about your ankle, but I am stoked about your tennis pro and how you can hit and just get your strokes back into their groove again. I have found that when I simply pay attention to what is going on around me, that my world is ever so much better and ever so much more fun.

The Law of Attraction works so well for me. Took me a while to figure out that I could do things deliberately and they would be good for me. But once I did, it was even more incredibly cool.

I do believe that our actions generate energy and actions that are appropriate and commensurate.

For instance, I’m willing to work until the job is done, and I don’t settle for “good enough.” I think that has been the reason I’ve been able to form some good partnerships and have some decent successes.

    Will I get a hamburger out of it? I don’t know… 😉

Very true, Keri. Our actions do generate energy and other actions. That sounds like an excellent way to live and work, that you know what works for you. Maybe hamburgers, maybe something else. I know I have gone to the store sometimes and every single thing that is on my list is on sale, but I only found that out when I got to the store. But if I hadn’t made a list and hadn’t gone to the store, I don’t believe those things would have materialized in my kitchen. In a world where anything is possible, materialization is certainly possible, I just don’t believe much in it.

I think actions count for a lot. Maybe I could arrange a downloadable hamburger for you, if you like. :-)

    Hi Michael,

I enjoyed your article very much. I like your striped sock explanation and how the Law of Attraction worked for your hamburger craving!

I really like your simple summary:

    We decide what we want.
We think thoughts about it and feel feelings about it.
    It shows up.
    We accept it.

It is easy to make things so complicated! Your post made me realize that it is much better to keep it simple.

There is a saying “You are where you want to be” and when I find myself in place I do not want to be, I realize I am accountable for what I attract in my life. It works both ways. We can attract really positive things, and also negative things. That is why it is so important to keep a positive attitude so we can let the good things come….like hamburgers!

Thank you for your very kind words, Raena. It is simple, sometimes it seems a lot more complex than it really is. To use the LOA consciously, takes a bit of practice in thinking in particular patterns. And those are more than likely different than the patterns we learned to think in before. Not always maybe, but pretty often they are radically different.

I like that saying, “You are where you want to be.” We are responsible for our actions and what we think. Not in a bad way, like we are guilty, but in a good way that because we are the ones responsible for what we do, we have the power to change. Extraordinarily excellent. :-)

    1. Michael

Thanks, Brian. It took me a while to figure out that its really a pretty simple idea.. And mostly I had to let go of my own thoughts about it being complicated. But when i did, my life became ever so much lighter.

  5. Rick Lelchuk

Excellent example of Law of Attraction. How we vibrate, what are thoughts are gives us access to the power of the energy of the Universe. Since we can control our thoughts and our emotions we can control what we attract. The only caveat is that we have no control over the timing of the Universe. And, that can get some frustrated. Patience!

Michael, I really enjoyed your post on the LOA. I have seen it unfold in my life time and time again and it happens naturally when I stay positive. I have also found that some of the things that happen come to me from some of the most unexpected places. Thanks for sharing your story and I hope your burger was tasty.

Thank you for your kind words, Shelley. It is so amazing when you look for evidence of the LOA showing up in your life, it’s there everywhere. I love it. Yes, my burger was very tasty, not like the recipes I see on your site, but tasty nonetheless. Actually, I’m gong to have another right now.

Your earlier comment about cars… I have an Impala and all I ever look for is other Impalas…especially ones that may have been previous cop cars (more powerful and faster…lol.)

When I first got my car, I had to take out a loan. It was not a huge loan, but it was one that would take a couple years to pay off. I knew if I wanted to keep it, I’d have to work really hard to keep it.

I did and I paid it off. The reward, the title came in the mail. It was the biggest purchase I had made at the time and it felt great because of all the work going into it.

Nile, it is so true about the cars. We found that out particularly when we bought a green one. had never noticed green cars on the road before and all of a sudden they were everywhere. :-) I agree, it is a very nice feeling when that title comes in the mail and its all yours. A great feeling of something well done.

      Jeepers, Marty, a half a sandwich, :-(.

That’s the cool thing about the Law of Attraction is it just works. It is a description of how the world is set up. For me, wishing rarely makes anything show up. But thinking about something I want, visualizing it, feeling as if it is something I already have, those things bring me opportunities to get what I am thinking about. Even if its my neighbor cooking. :-)

  8. Julieanne van Zyl

Hi Michael, the law of attraction works for me when I want something and I’m not worried about it. Like for example, for about a year, I was going out scuba diving with a particular charter group. And, I didn’t like them much and neither did my husband.

Then, one evening, we went for a drive down to what we call “the seaway”. And, there were some scuba divers just coming out of the water after a dive. We didn’t even know that people dived in that spot. So, we went over and spoke to them. Turned out one of them was an instructor and owner of a dive shop. And, we started going out with her group, she taught us an advanced course, and we went for lots of dives with her. She was fantastic and taught us so much about diving.

My point is, that we weren’t actively looking for those divers, we wanted to find someone else to dive with, and they just turned up one evening.

Things happen when you start thinking about them, and so long as you’re not “worried about not getting what you want”.

I DO believe that “action” plays an important part in getting what we want also.

    1. Michael

You are so right, Julieanne, worrying does not help too much to bring you what you want. Sometimes worrying about something will wind up bringing you the situation you are worried about rather than what you really want. that is no fun for sure.

Things that you want do happen when you think about them, visualize them if you like and live in a general air of expectation rather than fear. I take action on getting things I want. Because the opportunities to get what I have been thinking about tend to show up when I expect them to. Sometime i have to walk across the alley to the neighbor’s house to get a hamburger, but it is all part of the fun of life. And I got the added benefit of having a great afternoon outside in the sun with good company.

  9. David Merrill

The Law of Attraction works best when you work it, Michael.

The essential ingredients are intention, when you deliberately focus your mind on what you “intend” to attain; attention, when you give focused attention to bringing your intention to fruition; and no-tension, when you allow it all to happen… having no tension because you are truly convinced it will.

All 3 of these ingredients must be implemented to their fullest in order for the desired results to be attained.
David Merrill recently posted..Static HTML: iframe tabs | Update Facebook TimelinesMy Profile

    1. Michael

Absolutely right David. That is exactly how the Law of Attraction works with intention. I think that might be where some folks can’t figure out why they wind up with the things they do. They kind of let go of the importance of consciously directing their intention and wonder why their stuff doesn’t get there. With a little bit of dissection of their affirmations, its usually easy to see what it is that happened, they have plenty of attention but its all on things they don’t want. The LOA works great, it just brought them stuff they didn’t really want.

Fortunately all it takes is a change in thinking to bring the them the things they do want in their lives.

I lOVE it! Does the law of attraction work like that perfectly every time? Hmmm, I am not sure about that. But I do delight in the possibility that it does. As long as we think about our desires with positive energy, I believe they are more apt to come to fruition, whether it be that same day or at a later date.
I love to see LOA in action. It is so encouraging.
    Thanks for sharing your life,

Hi Lynn, thank you for your kind words. :-) The law of attraction does work perfectly. It brings into our lives those things we are attracting by our thoughts. Part of the deal with the LOA is to learn to consciously use it to bring more of what we want into our lives instead of more of what we are afraid we are going to get. And I agree, it is so cool when we see it working like this, even in those everday ways.

“Not Magic Socks huh!?” Great analogy especially because I have a pair of orange and striped socks that I wish would reproduce! But on to your post. The LOA talks about what you think about you bring about. And too say the LOA works by changing the things that we think about and focus on is a reminder for me to guard my thoughts because thoughts are things and Earl Nightingale always used to talk about the fact that we become what we think about most! And with that… I am off to get some more socks!

    1. Michael

Nope, not magic socks, Jay. :-) We do become what we think about, you’re absolutely right. And the thing we think about the most are the things that show up most often in our lives. When we think our thoughts on purpose with some direction to what we do want instead of what we don’t, our lives become more full and a lot more fun. That sounds way better to me.

  12. Stevie Smith

wow! that’s an amazing law of attraction! I didn’t realize that some time, we are to going to experience that kind of LOA in our daily activities! 13. Rebecca Reddy

A very consise post explaining the LOA. I especially enjoy how you put it: that what we are spending our thought energy on yields a return. It makes me ever so careful of where my thoughts are! Knowing the LOA, worrying about “the worst” happening to your loved ones will only put them at more risk. The better option is to imagine the outcome you want!

    1. Michael

      Hi Becca,

It is something when we realize that what we are thinking about becomes our life. Could be for some that this is a scary kind of thing with their current thoughts. But when we really get this and change the pattern we are thinking in, our lives change in simple and profound ways. :-)
