Things That Are Pointy

Seems like there are a lot of pokey things in the world to see. There are mountains, and bins full of nails at the hardware store and the ends of the pointy ice cream cones when you bite them off and let the melted ice cream drip down sweet and cool onto your tongue.

And some of the pointy things you really don’t want to be touching. Stuff like the spines on the cactuses, and the wires that come out of your tires when you get a flat on the highway and acupuncture needles when you are the one getting all of them stuck into you.

But there are some particular pointed things that are good for us, that make us feel good and that bring benefit into our lives. Like, the sun. That is often pictured as a circle with point of light coming out from it, much like the symbol we use here for A Life of Light.

a life of light

A Life of Light

Very benign points of light, not overly sharp, not going to hurt you in any way and all in all pretty healthy for you in normal amounts. (We can save the discussion on over-tanning for another day).

Points Of Attraction

And points that are good for us appear in a number of ways. There are points of light and points of discussion and most importantly to the way we live our lives, points of attraction. These points of attraction are symbolic for the entire law of attraction. They symbolize exactly how the process works. And how it works in a way that makes sense in our world.

How Does This Work?

Lots of time, you read things about the Law of Attraction and you wonder to yourself how any of what you are reading is going to make any sense in your life. You read about affirmations and vision boards and gratitude journals and while you are reading about these things you are wondering to yourself if any of these ideas really make any sense and if they really work.

The thing about most of those ideas is that they do make sense, but only if you understand the background behind them. Many times, a particular teacher will find a specific technique that works fabulously for them, but when they try to teach the technique to other people, it kind of falls short of success. Not because there is anything wrong with the technique, but because it works in a particular way for one particular person. And then the assumption gets made somewhere along the way that that one way must work for everyone in the same particular manner.

all differetn

We're All Different

But that kind of thought rarely bears much fruit. The techniques do work, but eventually, if you want to experience success with them, you must adapt them to your own way of thinking and your own way of taking action. Then they work just fine. Maybe you like a specific style of picture on your vision board that is radically different from the ones that are on the vision board of the person you learned from. No problem, it’s still a vision board and the process will work if you like hand drawn images and the other person likes photographs.

The idea of the vision board still works. And it works a whole lot better when you use the style of images that you prefer rather than copying the style of the teacher.

So what does this have to do with points? Specifically points of attraction. Good question.

Points of attraction that you use when you are working with the Law of Attraction are specific to you. Certain things will attract you and you will attract certain things to you. The results seem radically different, but the process is the same and here is how it works.

Let’s use the thought of gratitude for thinking about this analogy because that is a pretty universal type of thought that lots of people want more of in their life. The idea that feeling more gratitude creates more opportunities for things to show up in your life to be grateful for.

point of attraction

Point of Attraction

And let’s think about your life as a big ball. You think a thought of gratitude and instantly a point of attraction appears. Next, a beam of energy shoots out from the pointiest part of the point and sends gratitude energy out into the universe. The Universe, being a place where like attracts like, instantly sends back a beam of gratitude energy to you. Could be this energy manifests itself as a pleasant feeling, could be a cool new car, could be somebody gives you a  quarter so you can get your snack out of the vending machine at work. But whatever the Universe’s response is, it shows up as a point of gratitude.

2 points

2 Points!

Right beside the point you started with. So now there are 2 points that you can use to send more gratitude energy out into the Universe. And you know that since you sent out 2 beams of gratitude energy, you are going to get back 2 more.

Then you have 4 points of attraction from which to send gratitude energy into the Universe. And of course, this means that 4 come back.

8 points

More, More, More Points !!

And then 8 go out and 8 more come back and then 16 and then 32 and on and on and on, until your entire life is filled in an exponential manner with points of attraction of gratitude. And because this works in an exponential manner, the more gratitude you create in your life, the more opportunities you have to express even more gratitude.

It’s a wonderful idea. And it works. Sure, the details of each person’s dream might be a bit different, but the idea that you can create a life full of whatever you want by using the exponential power of the Law Of Attraction is the same no matter what your actual personal dream is.

Dream on, friend. The Law of Attraction is waiting to double, redouble, and re-redouble your desires, over and over again. All day, every day, just for you. :-)

scale

Standing On The Scale

The scale is a great symbol for many things in our lives. It can represent justice. It can represent equality. It can represent the careful making of a decision in weighing all the options carefully.

It can also represent a set of choices we make about our lives.

Many people spend their days in a whirlwind of negativity. It is as if each and every one of their thoughts is set out on a pre-determined path of pain and anguish and general despondency. It is a difficult thing for some folks to think that there could ever be a thought of a nature different than a negative one.

sad girl

I'm Just So Sad

Thoughts of fear and lack and unhappiness and general sadness permeate their lives on a daily basis. They get up in the morning dragging them out of bed, into the shower, already dreading the start of another day before they even really have their eyes open. And then it’s the endless decisions about what to wear because you know nothing really seems right. Nothing really fits well and all the clothes are just so tired out looking hanging their in the closet. And there really isn’t time to iron anything else because you already hit the snooze button 3 times and all your extra time is used up.

Then when you finally get yourself dressed you face the chore of eating enough breakfast to last you through the morning even though you really don’t feel like eating anything at all and pretty much wish you could back to bed and just sleep a few more hours because you are just so tired all the time and no matter how much you try to get to bed early, it just never happens and you are always, always, always tired and really just running on empty.

And that happens all through the week so that on the weekend you are even more tired and you can’t even begin to contemplate trying to accomplish the things that you were waiting all week to do on your free days.

It all seems to be too much to bear sometimes.

So how does this kind of scenario work together with the image of a scale as an analogy?

Well, it’s the kind of scale that is used to balance things. Like this.

2 scales

The Scale That Balance

So let’s say that when you get up in the morning, there is a scale right here in the middle of your life. Every morning when you get up the scale is there, standing right on the floor of your bedroom and you get to step on it, not to weigh yourself, but to see how your day is going to go today.

You have one foot on one side of the scale and your other foot on the, well, the other side of the scale. And when you start out in the morning, you are pretty much evenly balanced. Not tipping over too much one way or the other.

This is the scale that is going to forecast how your day is going to go today.

On one side of the scale is the icky kind of bad day that you might usually have. The kind like we were just talking about with the not wanting to get up out of bed in the morning, the dragging off into the shower, the hating all the clothes and all the other negative things that could go into making it a good day or an icky one.

rain or sun

What Kind Of Day Are You Going To Have?

And on the other side of the scale is the kind of day that dreams are made from, where everything goes your way, the sky is blue, your clothes fit perfectly., you are incredibly well rested and you are ready to get yourself up and off to that job that you love with sunny happy people who also love what they are doing and who all go out of their way to make sure your day is as wonderful as they could possible make it.

Those are the 2 sides of the scale that you are standing looking at every morning as soon as you get out of bed.

What is it that makes the difference between another day of slogging through the mud of an awful day or flying with the winds of angels on a cloud made up of all your dreams coming true? What could it be that is going to slide you onto one side of the scale or the other to tip your day over to either the negative side or to the positive side?

Good question. And at first glance it might seem that what makes your day proceed one way or the other must be something very heavy. Heavy enough anyway to tip the scale over tone side or the other.

But in fact, what makes the difference in which way the scale moves is the lightest of all things extant in the Universe.

thinking

Your Thoughts

Your thoughts.

Get out of bed with a mind full of difficult, dreary, soul stealing thoughts and your day is going to zip right over to the negative side as soon as your feet hit the floor.

But on the other hand, if your thoughts in the morning are positive; Light, uplifting, beautiful, dreamily delightful, your scale is going to tip itself right over to the positive side and bring you a day full of the magic that dreams are made of.

And that’s about as hard as it gets.

Truth is, it is wonderful to have nothing in your head but uplifting thoughts of fabulosity and awesomeness, but in fact you really only need to have a bit more than half of your thought be in the positive vein and your scale will slant itself right over to the positive side for the entire day. Like Rhonda Byrne says, all you need is 51 percent of your thoughts on one side or the other and the scale will tip in that direction.

And the way your scale tips first thing in the morning is the way it is going to go all through the day. Now 51 percent of your thoughts on one side or the other means that the other side is pretty much evenly balanced and your day is probably not going to hugely wonderful or horribly depressing, but it is definitely going to the side where you are thinking more thoughts.

51% –  61% –  71%  — 81%  –  91%

But, if for instance, you fill your mind and your heart with nothing but good hearty positive thoughts so that you head is not just 51 percent positive thoughts but 61 percent or 81 percent or even 91 percent, your day is going to be OUTSTANDING in every way.

The more you think positive thoughts, the more the results of those ideas come into your life.

smiley

AWESOME !!!

And it is just so awesome knowing first thing in the morning that you are in charge of how your scale is going to go and how your scale goes first thing in the morning is pretty much how your entire day is going to go. And you so deserve a wonderful day, please give yourself one tomorrow.

a sign from the universe

Please Pay Attention

Everybody is looking for a sign. Well, that might be a sweeping generalization that everybody is looking for a sign. But to hear some folks talk, you would think that their entire day consists of waiting around for the Universe to tell them

it’s a good time to do something.

Or it’s a bad time to do something.

Or it’s a time to wait.

Or a time to forge ahead.

It’s a time to look inside in a bout of introspection

Or maybe it’s a time to throw caution to the wind and not think at all but just charge ahead and

TAKE MASSIVE ACTION RIGHT NOW

 Or maybe not.

There are books you can get that are full of the meanings of various signs and symbols. You can research exactly what a particular culture thought about some symbol to see if that applies to your life.

There are books about number signs. Like series of numbers in a row and what those particular series’ mean. And books full of pictures of animals from around the world and each of those animals has their own particular meaning.

Grizzly Bear

It's 12:12 PM, Where's That Rabbit?

So that if you happen to go outside of your door at 12:12 in the afternoon on Tuesday and see a grizzly ear chasing a rabbit, then that might mean something. And you know what, it probably does mean something.

But here’s the thing about signs. They do mean something, but they mean something to you. They might not mean exactly the same thing to somebody else that saw the same sign as you.

The Universe is always sending you signs in much the same way that there are signs all around us everyday.

Take for instance, a short drive to the local grocery store in a small plaza of associated shops.

Each store in the plaza has its name on a sign mounted on the exterior wall so that anybody who happens to drive or walk by can see what he name of the store is. Now sometimes the signs are very clear. Perhaps the name of one establishment is Wendy’s Dry Cleaners.

You pretty much know that this is a store where you can bring your clothes that cannot be washed in the washing machine at home and they will clean and iron them for you.

peabodys sign

Since 1972

But what if the store has something like this for their sign: Peabody’s. And when they started and that is all it says. You will need to do some further investigation to find out what kind of store Peabody’s is. Nothing wrong with that, a short walk by the shop window and you’ll be able to figure out what this particular store does, no problem. Kind of like looking on the internet to see what significance a hawk flying through your backyard means.

For sure, each of the signs at the plaza has meaning, but they might not be important to you. If you did not need any new pajamas, then a sign over Eddy’s Pajama Boutique is not going to have any real meaning for you. Yes, it probably means they sell PJ’s there, but since you don’t want any right now, you are not going to pay much attention to that sign.

Sometimes It Doesn’t Matter How Cool The Sign Is

The pajama shop sign could be the most beautiful sign ever constructed with flashing lights and a little bell that rings whenever the wind blows and all the colors of the rainbow in a classy lettering style, but if you are not thinking about getting pajamas right now, all that information is worthless to you.

Sure, maybe later, when you need pajamas you will remember that store, but the odds are you will just start looking for a place to buy PJ’s without thinking about that shop at all. This could be similar to what happens if you are walking down the street and you see a sign from the Universe . . .

but it’s for somebody else.

Could be the greatest manifestation of meaning in the world, but if it doesn’t connect with you, it doesn’t make any difference.

Then too, there are signs that tell us to do things. Pretty specific actions, sometimes with consequences if we don’t do things in the way the sign says we should. Things like:

  • Only driving 70 MPH on the freeway
  • Or the doors marked entrance
  • Or the sign at the checkout stand that says “Cash or Credit Only, No Checks”

These are signs which we see, and we understand what they are saying and what they mean, but sometimes we just don’t pay any attention to them. And we act in ways that are quite contrary to what the sign is telling us we should do.

You hear people say stuff like this often. “Oh” they say, “all the signs were there that I needed to lose 50 pounds but I didn’t pay any attention and now I feel awful.”

Or maybe something like -

.
But Officer, it wasn’t my fault because I dropped my phone while I was texting my BFF because she made me so mad and it landed on top of the accelerator and that what’s made me do 95 in a 70 zone
.

The Universe is full of signs, and sometimes they are there just for us. And sometimes they are not. Yes, it could be that the dog walking along the street howling at midnight in front of your house might be a sign.

But if you are sound asleep and don’t hear or see the dog, then it doesn’t make much of a difference.

But There’s A Difference

Owl

I See You

The signs that are for us, though, are usually significant enough in some way to make us notice, if we pay attention. Some little spark of recognition goes through our inner sense and we think, “Hmm, there is something about the way that owl just looked right at me without moving, that makes me think this might be a sign for me.”

So you go home and fire up your trusty computer and start looking up the meaning of owls. Only to find that there are lots and lots of possible interpretations for seeing an owl. So then it takes a bit of doing to uncover the special meaning that applies to you. And strangely enough, when you find the correct interpretation for you, you will know it, if you are paying attention.

For sure today, the Universe is going to be sending many different signs to many different people.

And yours will be a whole lot easier to spot, if you are expecting one.

Sometimes the only meaning a particular sign might have is telling you that you are safe and loved by the entire Universe.

And you know what? If that is a sign you are expecting to see today, you are going to have a mighty awesome time today. Cool.

The world is a pretty big place and there are a lot of reasons for doing most things. Sometimes two or more people will do the same thing and they will have completely different reason for doing it.

going to the store

Going To The Store

Let’s take something easy like going to the store.

Some people will go because they have to pick up a carton of milk or a birthday present or a snake so they can clean out their drain in the kitchen.

And other people will go there because they want to see what’s on sale, to see if it is something they would like to have.

And others are going to go to the store because it is a safe warm place where they can be out of the elements and where the police won’t round them up for being vagrants.

And still others will go to the store because they work there or they deliver stuff there or they pick stuff up there and deliver it somewhere else.

Lots and lots of reasons for doing something as simple as going to the store.

Every Person Has Their Own Reason

That actually is a pretty simple thing to do. And there are a ton of reasons besides the ones already written down that you could be going to the store. You could even go so far as to say that each person who goes to the store has their own individual reason for doing that.

So for every person who goes to the store, there is a particular reason. And that reason is unique to each individual.

But that is for simple things like going to the store.

What do we do when the issue is a bit more complex than going to the store?

How do we figure out why other people are doing the things they are doing? Even more confounding on occasion is the question of how we figure out why we ourselves are doing what we are doing at any given moment?

red balloon

KAPOW !!!!!!!

Reflex we call it, the idea that when something happens we react to it. Like when somebody pops a balloon with a pin when we least expect it. We just do the same thing over and over again. If not the exact same thing, then the same pattern of behavior.

Take something a bit more complex than going to the store – like relationships. Why do we do the things we do in our relationships? Why does it always seem like we meet the same person over and over again. To the point where we might think that there is only one kind of person in the world. Now we are not just talking about romantic relationships here but all kinds of them.

It usually isn’t just that people pick the same kind of romantic partner over and over again, but the same kind of boss, and the same kind of hair stylist and the same kind of person to be friends with.

It is almost as if they are following a rule that somebody taught them about who to have relationships with.

.
And you already know that “almost as if” pretty much means they are following a rule and most people don’t even realize that they are doing this.
.

So where do these rules come from. The ones that tell you who your friends can be. What kind of place you are going to work at. The kind of people you can have a relationship with. Or not.

They come from your parents most of the time. And if not from your parents then from the people who raised you. And they often come from the person whose inherit job it was to steer you in your feelings.

Mother

Mother

Your mother. And you have the relationships you do because she said those were the ones you could have. And because that is often the kind of relationship she had herself.

Now, these are not always destructive. There are plenty of people who have great relationships with all the other people in their lives and often it is because their mothers had great relationships.

It is just one of those things in life that was a reason for not hanging around someone.

Because my Mom said so.

And usually that settled things pretty quickly. This pronouncement could come in the form of a blessing or it could come in the form of a shunning.

But either way, the fact is, that your Mom’s personal preferences in life have a lot to do with the relationships you have right now. And if those relationships are fabulous, that is fantastic.

But if they are not, then that is a different story.

Things Are Different Now

Truth is, it is OK for you to have your own idea about who your friends are going to be, the type of place you are going to work, the type of establishments you are going to seek out to do business in. And “because my Mom said so” is probably not the best reason in the world for making a choice anymore.

<insert emoticon for sotto voce>OK, if you are a kid reading this, then sure, it’s a pretty good reason. But for everyone else, it is OK for you to make your own decisions.</emoticon for sotto voce>

But Things Might be The Same

Now, if those turn out to be the same as the ones you were taught to make when you were a kid, that’s cool. And if they are not, then it is really alright for you to choose something different right now.

Sometimes the ability to believe that this is an OK thing to do is hard to get hold of. And people spend a lot of time trying to figure out if it is OK for them to make their own choices.

It is OK for you to decide to choose something different in your life. All choices have consequences, of course, but making your own choices, even if they are different than what you were raised with, is something that you can do.

And you don’t need anyone’s permission.

Could be that you don’t need to make any different choices, and that is excellent. But if you do, if that kind of nagging feeling is in your tummy and you are wondering if it is OK for you to select a different course of action in your life – the answer is “yes”

It really is your life

Either way, you are making a choice. Remain the same or change. And both can bring you great benefits.

But peace of heart lies in understanding that you do have a choice.  Might as well choose to have a great day and a great life. Those sound pretty good to me.

a life of light house

Home Sweet Home

Houses are interesting places. There are lots of kinds of them throughout various places around the world. Sometimes they are made out of bricks, and sometimes they are made out of stone.

Sometimes they are made out of hay bales; and other times, made out of logs. They can be 2 stories, 3 stories, or just one level. Lots of windows or hardly any at all. But each house reflects the preferences of the people who live there.

And there are a lot of choices about what you can do to make your house look like you want it to look.

And for many people, those choices are really important, and one of the most important choices is color. What color the house is, can make a huge difference in how people feel about their homes and it can really change what other people think about your home too.

Jazz Blue

Jazz Blue

So let’s say, your house is blue. Not really light blue, but a color that is really suited for the northeast part of the US. This is a pretty dark blue as a matter of fact the Behr paint company, which is really big in the US, calls this color Jazz Blue, and it is pretty dark.

Not black, but dark blue nonetheless. Now this is going to give your house a particular kind of style that will be communicated to anyone seeing your home. Nothing wrong with that, it is just the way the world is. People make a decision about things based on how they look.

But it could be that when you first got your house and it was this dark blue color that, that style exactly suited your thought about your home. A bit subdues, not too flashy, kind of sedate and calm. Just like your family. People often have emotional attachments to the color of the home they live. And the thought of changing that color is difficult for them to contemplate.

Time For A Change

But sometimes, lives change and people think they want something different. Like, for instance, they want to change the color of their home from Jazz Blue to Sunshine Yellow. Something changed in their lives and they want to make a change on the outside too.

sunshine yellow

Sunshine Yellow

So they go out to the garage to get the paint. And they get the ladder, and they get the paint brushes and the paint roller and the paint tray and the drop cloth and a bottle of water to drink in case they get thirsty.

And they set all their painting equipment up in the backyard and pour the paint from the bucket into the paint tray and put the paint roller on the handle and get out the brush and start painting.

They paint for 3 hours and decide its time for a water break. Then they paint some more and its afternoon and the sun is starting into go down and its getting a bit dark so they start o hurry things along a little bit because who wants a half painted house when the sun comes up in the morning.

flashlight

Thanks But No Thanks

And it gets a bit darker, and nobody wants to paint with a flashlight, and little bit chillier and now they are really moving along trying to get the last corner of the house painted before the sun goes completely down and they paint and paint and paint and just before the last of the sun disappears over the horizon, just as the moon is starting to peek out from the eastern sky, they finish.

The last bit of paint is on the house and in a triumph of delight in they rush to brag about getting the painting all done in one day and it is fabulous. Everyone in the family is excited they decide to throw a special dinner to celebrate the painting of the home and start up the grill to cook some fine tasty hamburgers and shrimp. Yum yum yum.

Everyone washes up, dinner is served, and even a celebratory bottle of wine is consumed and it’s off to bed with a job well done.

A good night’s sleep. Well rested, showers taken, teeth brushed breakfast eaten, nicely dressed and it’s off to the backyard, camera in hand to record for posterity, the results of yesterday’s fabulous work.

And there in the backyard, standing in awe as ready to take pictures of the freshly painted house, they take a close look and discover that the entire house has been freshly painted with a gleaming coat of Jazz Blue.

JAZZ BLUE !!!

Oooof.

shocked smiley

#$^%^&%!!!!!!!!

“How can this be?”

everyone shrieks in dismay. We got the paint from the garage; we got the brushes and the drop cloths, and the paint rollers, and the ladders and the paint tray. We spent all day out here with only a single break for water, working and sweating and toiling under the sun only to find out that the house is still blue.

Well, no. The house is not still blue.

The house is blue – again.

How can that be, when you went through that big process of change. Got the supplies, dragged them outside, worked hard and long and it seems like nothing is any different even though you put in all that effort.

Most times, when similar things happen in your life, when you did similar sorts of changes but you wind up with results like you had before you started it’s because of one small thing.

You Have To Start At the Beginning

You didn’t prepare for the most important change. Now in this metaphorical sort of story, the most important change is that the house change from blue to yellow. But you neglected to do the most basic thing necessary for that change to happen.

You didn’t get any yellow paint – but you did everything else. You got all the supplies, you brought them outside, you worked all day changing, but those are all things that help the change along, once you start with the most important part.

If you are interested in changing your life for something you want more, for something you think you would like better, its an important thing to begin with that most important part. The beginning.

Because if you don’t start there, all the work you did will only bring you the result you do not want instead of those that you do.

This Makes Sense

So if you want to paint your house yellow, you need to start with yellow paint . . .

Because no matter how many times you paint your house with the same old blue paint that you’ve always painted it with, it is never going to be yellow.

Have a great change today.  :-)
