Hugh Liddle Interview
The way the Universe works is that when you start off on a journey, even if you don't know exactly how you are going to get where you want to go, the people that you need to help you along "just show up" right when you need them to.
One of those people who has shown up in our positive journey here at ALifeOfLight.com is Hugh Liddle. He is the founder and CEO of Red Cap Sales Coaching, where he coaches sales people using the benefit of his over 40 years of sales experience in a variety of areas. One of his main goals is to change the popular view of sales people, so that everyone can appreciate the skill and knowledge that professional sales people have.
The Universe bring the people to us that we need along our way and then gives us little tidbits and surprises just to let us know we are being thought of. When Hugh and Michael first started talking, they found out that even though they had never met before, they shared common upbringing locations, common locations where they had lived in the desert of southern California and a host of other things that "just happened to show up" to let them know they were being looked after. And when we say common locations, what we mean are places that nobody else in the world has ever heard of. That is how remote these places are. It was awesome and humbling at the same time to see how connected we all are.
We asked Hugh a few questions about his background and found out that he is a veritable fountain of knowledge of all kinds and a most excellent human being as well. Well, we already knew how awesome he is, but it is nice to see that right up front an personal again.
Michael Shook @ALOL: Could you tell me a little bit about your background.
Hugh Liddle: I’ve been selling for over 44 years…all sorts of products and services, from financial services to advertising to gym memberships to alarm systems to milk. And now of course, I sell my sales coaching services. I learned to sell the hard way - by making loads of mistakes, learning from them and picking up bits and pieces from a variety of folks along the way. I don’t think there was any such thing as a sales coach when I started selling in the ‘70s. So now I’m THE Sales Wizard because I never did quit, even when the going was tough. My clients can enjoy the luxury of becoming sales wizards themselves in a much shorter time because they can take advantage of my 44 years of experience. They don’t have to make the mistakes I did. They can learn to do it right the first time!
Michael Shook @ALOL: Please tell me about how you came to be such a positive person.
Hugh Liddle: I think it’s a combination of things, Michael. First off, I was blessed to have parents who were positive and encouraged me to be my very best. They let me know early on that I could accomplish anything I really wanted to. I’ve also aligned myself through the years with friends and business associates and church family who are wonderful, positive people. Early on in my work career I started reading great books like Think and Grow Rich and How To Win Friends and Influence People and listen to recordings from speakers like Earl Nightingale and Charlie “Tremendous” Jones. And of course, I still read and listen to positive material, most notably my message from A Life of Light every day!
Michael Shook @ALOL: Please tell me about one of the most significant emotional events of your past and how that influenced your positive outlook on life.
Hugh Liddle: Oh, man there are so many! OK, playing high school football and winning a game that nobody but us thought we could win. I was a defensive tackle and had the most incredible game ever. Got my picture and a writeup in the local paper, loads of people: my parents, my coaches, my friends, my girlfriend praising me after the game. And the reason we won is that the coaches instilled in me, and in the rest of the team, that we were able, that we could do it, that we were winners. The power of positive thinking was manifest, and I noticed! The thrill of winning has never left me over the 50 years since!
Michael Shook @ALOL: Please tell me about your biggest dream right now
Hugh Liddle: My biggest dream is to change the world’s attitude toward sales and salespeople, and of course, the only way to do that is to help enough other salespeople sell in a new and different way that makes selling easy, fun and profitable for them and for their prospective clients. Sales has a bad reputation, and deservedly so, because it’s been done wrong for so many years. I want to educate the salespeople of the world to do it right!!
Michael Shook @ALOL: Please tell me about your biggest fear about that dream.
Hugh Liddle: Well, Michael, time is of the essence. I’m 67 years old as of February 27th. Of course my goal is to die at age 125, shot by a jealous husband! ;>D Still, there are just so many salespeople and a relatively short time. The fear is that I, and the people who are helping me teach, won’t be able to provide the teaching that’s needed during my lifetime. I want to see my goal fulfilled, God willing!
Michael Shook @ALOL: Please tell me about your life if you knew you only had one week to live.
Hugh Liddle: Honestly, I don’t think I’d do anything much differently than what I ordinarily do, except to call EVERYONE who has been so special in my life to tell them one more time that I love them!
Michael Shook @ALOL: If you were coaching them, what is the most important thing you could tell our audience right now.
Hugh Liddle: It’s not your job in selling to try to get people to do what you want them to do. It’s your job to help them do what THEY want and need to do!
