How To Create A Fabulous Life Starting Right Now
The idea of the 2 percent better day has to do with the idea of compounding. A mathematical concept where you take a certain number and increase it each day by a particular amount.
If you've ever heard of that quote attributed to Albert Einstein saying that one of the miracles of the world is compounding interest, this is what that thought is all about.
As an example here in wanting to enjoy a better day than yesterday, we'll take a look at how a series of small improvements over a relatively short amount of time can lead to astounding results.
1 Through 10 Scale
First, let's start with a 1 through scale of how your day is going. And for this example, we'll pick 5 on a scale of 10. Not horrible but not fantastic either.
And after reading through this post, you decide that tomorrow you want to have a better day. But not a 100 percent better day, but only a 2% better day. 2% on most people's scales is definitely doable - which is why we chose it here.
Mathematically, from a calculation point of view, the way you show this is:
5 x 1.02 because the .02 represents 2%.
So in this example yesterday was a 5, and today is 5 x 1.02 or 5.1. Not that much of an increase. Definitely better, and definitely well within our capabilities to improve.
So if today is 5.1, then tomorrow, we decide we are going to improve by 2% again, so the math for that is 5.1 x 1.02 = 5.202.
Then the next day we take that 5.202, multiply it by 1.02 again to get 5.306.
Looks like it is going to take forever to see any significant improvement in our days.
But wait, there's more.
The Miracle of Compounding Numbers
The thing about the miracle of compounding numbers is that they get a lot bigger, very quickly. For instance in this case of using the 2% increase each day, we get
Day 5 = 5.520
Day 10 = 6.095 (already up a whole point on the day rating scale)
Day 15 = 6.729
Day 20 = 7.430
Day 25 = 8.205
Day 30 = 9.509
Day 35 = 10.02 (on a scale of 10)
Day 40 = 11.043
Day 45 = 12.192
Day 50 = 13.462
Day 55 = 14.863
Day 60 = 16.409
That means that in 2 months - 60 days, by making a small improvement in the quality of your day, you can be enjoying days that are not only more than 3 times better, but are rated 16 on a scale of 10.
Is it possible that you might miss a day here and there in your daily improvements? Sure it is. But you don't have to knock yourself back down on your scale either, just pick up where you left off.
It works, and works well. When you want to change something in your life, you start with an amount of change that is small enough that you can see yourself doing this successfully.
Then do it.
